Why Context Clues Matter for IELTS

In IELTS Reading, you’ll encounter unknown words – guaranteed. The difference between Band 6 and Band 8 students isn’t vocabulary size, it’s the ability to understand words from context. This foundational skill supports every other IELTS activity: reading comprehension, writing naturally, and speaking confidently.

Strategy 1: Context Clues

Use surrounding sentences to infer meaning. Look for definitions, examples, or contrasts that reveal what a word means.

Strategy 2: Word Formation

Break words into parts (prefixes, roots, suffixes). ‘Un-trust-worthy’ = not + trust + able to be trusted.

Strategy 3: Word Families

Learn related forms together: convenient (adj) → convenience (noun) → conveniently (adv). One word becomes three.

Strategy 4: Collocations

Words have natural partnerships: “keep in touch” not “maintain in touch”. Learning these makes your English sound natural.
